Which curtain type should you choose? Eight window options and room partitions

Start by separating three choices: the curtain heading or operating mechanism, the fabric, and the fitting. Different headings can use the same light-blocking fabric. Blackout describes light control; it does not specify a heading style.
Eyelet curtains
Rings at the top of the fabric slide over a visible pole, creating broad folds and making the pole part of the decoration.
Consider for: Bedrooms and living rooms where you prefer a simple look and have space for fabric at the sides.
Wave curtains
Compatible curtain headings and track components create continuous waves for a clean, orderly appearance.
Consider for: Modern living rooms and spaces where a consistent fabric rhythm is part of the design.
Pleated curtains
Pleats at the heading organise the fabric into regular folds, with different pleat styles and fullness options.
Consider for: Homes, reception rooms, bedrooms and accommodation with a tailored or classic look.
Roman blinds
Fabric lifts into stacked folds, combining a soft textile appearance with a covering that gathers above the window.
Consider for: Bedrooms, living rooms and furnished corners where the window size suits the mechanism.
Louis-style curtains
Layered draping and decorative details, such as swags or tassels, make the window a focal point.
Consider for: Reception rooms and spaces where you want a distinctive, classic decorative feature.
Venetian blinds
Horizontal slats tilt to adjust incoming light and privacy.
Consider for: Workspaces, rooms with a clean-lined design and spaces needing light adjustment without raising the whole covering.
Roller blinds
Fabric rolls up above the window. Light-filtering and light-blocking options are available, depending on the product.
Consider for: Workspaces, simple interiors and windows close to desks or furniture.
Vertical blinds
Vertical louvres rotate and draw to the side, offering adjustable light control across wider windows.
Consider for: Offices, wider windows and rooms where adjustable daylight is useful.
Room partitions
Divide a room into functional areas using a partition suited to the space, with design and material choices assessed on site.
Consider for: Homes, offices and spaces needing separate activity areas with convenient access.
Choose for the room, not just the name
For bedrooms, start with light and privacy. For living rooms, consider atmosphere and daylight. For offices, check screens and workspace clearance. In accommodation, consider guests and housekeeping together. Compare actual samples and quotes with the same scope.
